I’d rather give you the actual figures from the studies—the ones you just saw—because they convey the same message without any rounding.
And what about the pill in all this?
This comparison comes up often. The birth control pill is very effective when used correctly. In real life, its effectiveness depends on how consistently it is taken—just like any other daily routine. The symptothermal method follows the same logic: it is very reliable when used rigorously, but less so when conditions aren’t met.
A note that’s important to me: The purpose of this article is to inform you, not to recommend one method over another. Choosing a form of birth control is a deeply personal decision that should be made with a healthcare professional who is trained in these matters and familiar with your situation.
Observation is at the heart of everything
If there’s one key point to remember: the excellent results of the symptothermal method are based on careful observation, carried out day after day, using two signs rather than just one—temperature and cervical mucus. It is this combination, known as “double checking,” that makes cycle tracking accurate and reliable. This is, in fact, what sets Sensiplan apart from methods that rely on only one sign.
One point I think is worth sharing: all of these studies were conducted with women who had received training and support. It’s perfectly fine to start tracking your cycle on your own, and that’s already a wonderful journey in itself. But having guidance—especially in the beginning—goes a long way toward helping you track your cycle accurately and move forward with confidence.
Allow about three cycles to get comfortable with the process—enough time to learn to recognize your own signs. And rest assured: even this learning period has been shown in studies to be reliable, as long as it’s properly supported.
